Please join Senator Bob Graham and Congressman Lou Frey for a Forum on the Civic Health of Florida and its Communities.

The Forum on Florida’s Civic Health will present the results of Florida’s Civic Health 2009. Together we will consider ways in which we might strengthen citizen engagement in our communities. The Forum will be a dialog among panelists and guests. The recommendations and suggestions that emerge from this Forum shape the working agenda of the Florida Joint Center for Citizenship – a partnership between the Bob Graham Center and the Lou Frey Institute.

Join us and be a part of reshaping Florida’s civic destiny.

Ditch of Dreams: The Cross Florida Barge Canal and the Struggle for Florida's Future. Featuring Steven Noll, Senior Lecturer, UF Department of History, and David Tegeder, Professor of History, Santa Fe College. Drs. Noll and Tegeder will be discussing their forthcoming book “Ditch of Dreams,” which will be released in November by the University Press of Florida. Part of the Sam Proctor Florida History Lecture Series.

As part of the Presidential Lecture Series, three former U.S. Ambassadors will speak on Foreign Policy: Frank McNeil, former Ambassador to Costa Rica and UF Alumnus;
Ray Mabus, former Ambassador to Saudi Arabia and former Governor of Mississippi;
and Douglas McElhaney, former Ambassador to Bosnia and Herzegovina. Tickets for this event are free and available at the Graham Center, 220 Pugh Hall.

Presidential Lecture Series. “World at Risk” with Senator Jim Talent and Senator Bob Graham. Former Missouri Senator Jim Talent and Former Florida Senator Bob Graham are Co-Chairs of the Congressional Commission on Prevention of Weapons of Mass Destruction. They will speak on the findings of their year-long study on world security.

Dr. Joseph Nye, Former Dean of the Kennedy School

Dr. Joseph Nye, acclaimed author and former Chair of the National Intelligence Council, Assistant Secretary of Defense for International Security Affairs, and Chair of the National Security Council Group on Nonproliferation of Nuclear Weapons, discussed leadership and public policy.  This event wass sponsored by the UF College of Fine Arts Center for the Arts and Public Policy.  The event was co-sponsored by the Bob Graham Center for Public Service, Division of Sponsored Research, the International Center, and the Department of Political Science.

Pulitzer Prize Winner, David McCullough

Two-time Pulitzer Prize Winner David McCullough was the honored keynote speaker for the Graham Center Opening Ceremony Celebration. David McCullough has been widely acclaimed as a “master of the art of narrative history,” “a matchless writer.”  He is twice winner of the National Book Award, twice winner of the Pulitzer Prize.  In December 2006 he received the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the nation’s highest civilian award.

The Next President's Agenda

Senators Chuck Hagel (R-Neb) and Jay Rockefeller (D-WV) debated the role of the new president.  The event was moderated by Former Senator Bob Graham, and the Q & session was moderated by the Graduate Student Council in the Department of Political Science. This lecture is part of the Presidential Lecture Series: The Path to the White house.

Madeleine Albright (Former United States Secretary of State) addressed the College. Albright discussed her new book, “Memo to the President Elect: How We Can Restore America’s Reputation and Leadership.”

Dr. Albert Pierce, University Professor of Military Ethics from the National Defense University, spoke on The Ethical Lessons of Abu Ghraib and Strategy and Ethics in Counter Insurgency.

Matt Bai of the New York Times and Joe Trippi discussed the relationship between the media and the Executive Office. The event was moderated by Tom Fielder. This event was part of the Presidential Lecture Series: The Path to the White House.

Civics Academy

With support from the Helios Education Foundation, the Florida Joint Center for Citizenship and FLREA offered a week long professional development program for middle school civics teachers during the summer of 2008.

The Parties and the Presidency

Former Chairmen of the Democratic and Republican National Committees, Terry McAuliffe and Frank Fahrenkopf, will speak in the Ocora September 5th at 4 pm.

Terry McAuliffe served as the chairman of the Democratic National Committee from 2001 until 2005. He is the author of What a Party! and was chairman of the Hillary Clinton for President Committee.

Frank Fahrenkopf served as Chairman of the Republican National Committee during the Reagan Administration from 1983 to 1989. He is currently the President and CEO of the American Gaming Association.

This event is part of the Presidential Lecture Series: The Path to the Whitehouse.

Featuring Congressman Adam Putnam, Representative, 12th District of Florida; Congresswoman Debbie Wasserman Schultz, Representative, 20th District of Florida; and Brendan McLaughlin, News Anchor, WFTS-TV. This event is part of the Presidential Lecture Series: The Path to the Whitehouse.

Adam Putnam is a UF alumna with a degree in economics. He is a member of the House Committee on Financial Services and chairman of the Republican Conference.

Debbie Wasserman Schultz is a UF alumna with a degree in political science. She currently serves on the House Committee on Appropriations and the House Judiciary Committee.

The Politics of Health Policy, a conference. Student presentations addressed topics in international health, federal and state health programs, public health, and medical practice in the United States.

Forum on Civic Engagement

The Graham Center Forum on Civic Engagement presents its first speaker of the semester. Please join us as the Graham Center inaugurates its interdisciplinary lecture series on political participation and public policy. Future speakers include Stephen Prothero, Professor of Religion at Boston University, and Donald Critchlow, Professor of History at Saint Louis University. Refreshments will be provided.

Dr. Stephen Ortiz, UF alum and Assistant Professor of History at Bowling Green State University to lecture on "Soldier-Citizens: Veteran Activism and the Expansion of the Twentieth-Century Veteran Welfare System."

Dr. Karen Donfried presents, Transatlantic Trends: US and European Relations in 2007.

As the Executive Vice President of the German Marshall Fund, Dr. Karen Donfried provides strategic direction to GMF's programs on transatlantic relations, oversees and helps manage GMF's headquarters in Washington and its seven offices in Europe, and works closely with GMF's Board of Trustees. Dr. Donfried returned to GMF in 2005 as senior director for policy programs following an extended leave of absence during which she served in the U.S. Department of State. While at the State Department from October 2003 through May 2005, Dr. Donfried handled the Europe portfolio on the Policy Planning Staff in the Office of the Secretary of State. She previously served as GMF's director of foreign policy and, prior to that, worked as a European Affairs specialist in the Foreign Affairs, Defense, and Trade Division of the Congressional Research Service (CRS). She has written extensively on German foreign and defense policy, European integration, and transatlantic relations. She also appears regularly on U.S. and European television and radio. She is a member of the Council on Foreign Relations and the American Council on Germany. Dr. Donfried completed a Ph.D. and MALD at the Fletcher School of Law and Diplomacy at Tufts University and a Magister at the University of Munich in Germany. She holds a bachelor's degree in government and German from Wesleyan University in Connecticut.
