Faculty and Student Grants

Policy Scholars Program

The Bob Graham Center for Public Service is pleased to announce the 2008-2009 Policy Scholars Program (PSP).  The PSP is designed to provide undergraduates with an opportunity to do original policy research with a faculty mentor.  Students and their faculty mentors will begin conducting research in the summer of 2008 and continue their research during the 2008-2009 school year.  Students will present their research at a conference during the spring 2009 term.

Recipients will receive a $2,000 stipend in the summer of 2008 and up to $500 to cover approved research-related expenses.  The faculty mentor will receive $500 in current expense funds.

Eligibility

Students who are currently pursuing the Certificate in Public Leadership are eligible to apply. The student should have taken at least two of the five courses required for the certificate by the end of the spring, 2008 term.

To Apply

Students who are interested should first identify a faculty member to serve as their research mentor. The student will then work with their mentor to develop a two-page research proposal that outlines the policy question (s) to be addressed and the research methods that will be used to answer the question (s).  Applications will be judged in terms of the importance of the policy question (s) and the quality of the research plan. Priority will be given to research that has the greatest potential to improve existing public policies.

Applications should include a completed application form, a letter of support from the faculty mentor and the research proposal.

APPLICATIONS ARE DUE IN THE DEPARTMENT OF POLITICAL SCIENCE, 234 ANDERSON HALL NO LATER THAN 4:30 P.M., FRIDAY APRIL 11, 2008.

For additional information and an application form contact Professor David Hedge, Academic Programs Director, Department of Political Science, 218 Anderson Hall, 273-2367, dhedge@ufl.edu.

Course Development/Enhancement Grants 2008

The Bob Graham Center for Public Service invites applications for a limited number of Course Development and Course Enhancement Grants to be offered as part of the Graham Center’s new Certificate in Public Leadership program and the proposed bachelor and master programs in public policy.  Course development grants will support the development of new undergraduate courses on some aspect of public policy including courses on substantive public policies (e.g. welfare, security, environmental, health, or comparative policy) the policy process (e.g. the regulatory process or ethics and public policy) or policy analysis.  Course enhancement grants will entail a major revision of an existing undergraduate course to include new policy-related emphases or a new pedagogical approach.

Eligibility

All UF faculty are eligible to apply but priority for this first round of grants will be given to faculty who are teaching core courses in the Certificate in Public Leadership program.  Faculty receiving a course development grant will receive a $3,000 stipend that can be used for either 2008 summer salary or for course-related expenses including travel, student assistance, software, books and journals, or hardware.  Faculty receiving a course enhancement grant will receive a $1,500 stipend that can be used for summer salary or course-related expenses.  Salary grants include the university’s 18% fringe benefit rate. Funds must be spent by August 15, 2008.    Faculty who receive course grants must offer the course within three semesters of funding and at least once every three semesters thereafter.

To Apply

Applications should include:  a) a detailed proposal outlining the proposed new course or, in the case of a course enhancement application, how an existing course will be revised to accommodate new policy emphases or a novel teaching approach; b) a statement from the applicant’s department chair or supervisor stipulating that the faculty member will offer the course as required as part of their normal teaching load; and c) the applicant’s CV.  Applicants should be received in the Department of Political Science, 234 Anderson Hall by Friday,  April 11, 2008.

Successful applicants must submit a new or enhanced course syllabus to the Graham Center by the end of the Fall 2007 semester.
