Master of Arts in Public Policy and Administration (MPPA) Proposed Curriculum
The proposed MPPA program consists of a new degree program in Public Policy and an extensive revision of the Public Affairs concentration currently offered by the Department of Political Science. The Bob Graham Center for Public Service will offer this new professional degree, with the cooperation of departments in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Warrington College of Business Administration, and other colleges and departments at UF.
The core curriculum consists of courses in economics and political science on the policy process, policy analysis, public management, and research methods. In addition MPPA students will be required to pursue a 9-12 hour concentration in a policy or administrative field that will typically require students to take courses in additional disciplines including, among others, sociology, education, urban planning, environmental sciences, and public health. Examples of possible concentrations are listed below. MPPA students must also complete a master's project during their second year in the program.
The proposed program builds upon the current public affairs in the department of political science. The existing program has a history of competing successfully with other programs in the state for student awards, much sought after Presidential Management Internships at the federal level, and jobs throughout the state and nation. Over the past several years, graduates have been placed at the U.S. Department of Justice, Blue Cross Blue Shield, OPPAGA, Florida's legislature, the National League of Cities, UF, and as local administrators throughout the state.
The proposed program will draw from a number of departments and programs across campus for its core courses as well as the required focus fields including economics, business administration, sociology, urban planning, and history.
